Woman denies plotting over BGT singer rape claim

by Madison May 20, 2025
written by Madison

A woman who accused a former Britain's Got Talent contestant of rape has denied plotting with another alleged victim to get a "victory" over him.

Andrew Johnston, from Carlisle, competed as a singer on the TV talent show in 2008 and is on trial at Southwark Crown Court charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

On Tuesday one of the women told the court: "I can tell you that at no point was there a feeling that 'we have got him'. It was not a victory."

Mr Johnston, 30, of Newtown Road, denies all charges relating to two women. The trial continues.

The woman said she had spoken up because it was the "right thing" to do.

Asked by defence counsel Rupert Kent if she was trying to hide collusion between herself and the other woman, she replied: "I am not."

'Wanted to gloss over it'

Giving evidence from behind a screen, the second woman told the court it had taken her months to process what had happened and it went on to affect different areas of her life.

She told the court: "My interpretation of events developed when I found that things in my life like intimate relations with my boyfriend were affected."

On the suggestion it should have been immediately obvious she had been raped, the woman said: "No, I think it takes time to work out.

"I wanted to gloss over it. I wanted to be able to move on and not to be dealing with years of the aftermath of this."

Mr Johnston told interviewing detectives had did not have non-consensual sex with either woman.

The hearing continues.

written by Claire

A fire crew has successfully completed an eight-hour stair climb of Surrey's tallest tower for charity.

Newly-recruited firefighters from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) completed their challenge of walking up and down the 34-storey Tower 1 in Woking's Victoria Square in full kit at 18:00 BST on Tuesday.

The residential skyscraper complex consists of three towers, with Tower 1 being the highest at 384ft (117m).

The crew has so far raised more than £5,500 for the Fire Fighters Charity, surpassing their target.

A fire service spokesperson said the money would provide "essential support and rehabilitation for those brave firefighters who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe".

SFRS raised more than £100,000 for the charity in 2024 through charity walks, car washes and open days.

Plaid MS broke Senedd rules over letter leak

by Anthony May 18, 2025
written by Anthony

A Plaid Cymru MS has been found by a politicians' watchdog to have broken the Senedd members' code of conduct.

However, the report by the watchdog recommends "no further action is required" against Siân Gwenllian, the member for Arfon.

She was found to have shared extracts from a confidential letter sent by the Senedd's Commissioner for Standards, Douglas Bain, to an individual who had complained about her.

But the Senedd's standards of conduct committee agrees with the watchdog that the politician "shared this information in order to defend herself from inaccurate reports being made about inadmissible complaints".

Man arrested after women and girls approached

by Michelle May 18, 2025
written by Michelle

A man has been arrested following reports that a number of women and girls had been approached by a person who had caused them concern.

An employee in a town centre store in Dewsbury contacted officers on Tuesday and also posted about the incident on social media, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

As a result, a 24-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Thursday on suspicion of harassment.

Police said that three further potential victims had also been identified and spoken to by officers, and high visibility patrols would be increased in the town centre over the coming days to offer reassurance to the public.

Dewsbury's neighbourhood policing team was aware of comments on social media from other females who said they had been approached by a man in the town centre, the force spokesperson said.

'Concerning circumstances'

Insp Liz Lockwood said officers were working to ensure that all victims were appropriately supported, adding that a "comprehensive investigation" would be carried out.

"We will be increasing high visibility patrols in the town centre today and over the coming days to offer reassurance to the public, visit stores and reassure business owners and staff and to collate details of any further victims," she said.

"If anyone else has been approached by a man in concerning circumstances that has caused them to feel harassed, alarmed or distressed, then I would urge them to come forward.

"We are committed to protecting women and girls from violence and the fear of violence."

Cyclist breaks bones after pothole left unfilled

by Paisley May 17, 2025
written by Paisley

A cyclist was left with a broken cheekbone and elbow after he hit a pothole covered with water before blacking out.

The BBC can reveal Surrey, East and West Sussex, Brighton and Kent councils paid out £4.1m in compensation to road-users over the past five years.

Crowborough resident Gianni Montoro, who was cycling in Station Road in Groombridge, said: "My front wheel never came out of that pothole, my back wheel came up and I got catapulted down to the ground."

East Sussex County Council wished Mr Montoro a speedy recovery and said they carried out a temporary repair before the incident, but could not do a permanent repair due to water on the road.

'I hit the ground like a potato bag'

The pothole was submerged in water and had been reported to East Sussex County Council by a resident four weeks before the accident.

"I hit the ground like a potato bag," Mr Montoro said.

The father-of-two has been cycling for more than 20 years but said the incident had left him shaken.

"The pothole was left, I couldn't see it, I had no idea what was coming, I just know I couldn't swerve to protect myself," added Mr Montoro, who owns the delicatessen Arte Bianca in Tunbridge Wells.

He said: "If any other cyclists had gone the same way that morning they would have had the same destiny as mine. No chance."

The pothole was repaired a few days after the accident.

Groombridge resident Sarah Andrews said she reported the pothole on the Fix My Street App.

She said the council came out and marked the pothole to be fixed but it was not filled in.

Ms Andrews added: "The pothole was bad and was getting progressively worse.

"It was bigger than my foot and I'm a size five, the water was eventually up to my ankle."

People put a traffic cone in the pothole to warn drivers

Ms Andrews said residents had put a traffic cone in the pothole to alert drivers and cyclists, but the cone got damaged.

"Why didn't the council put up a barrier or cordon it off so people knew it was there?" she added.

Duncan Dollimore, from charity Cycling UK, said potholes could be "potentially life-changing" to cyclists.

Every year 40 cyclists are seriously injured from potholes and between two and three die, Mr Dollimore says.

He added: "It puts people off cycling which has massive health, environmental and wellbeing benefits so we should be doing more to make sure this isn't a problem."

US company set to take over tech firm

by Jacqueline May 17, 2025
written by Jacqueline

A Newry-based technology firm is on the brink of being taken over by a company from the United States.

FD Technologies' board of directors said it had received a number of proposals from TA Associates, a Boston-based private equity company.

The most recent offer was for £24.50 a share, which compares to a closing market price of £19.30 a share a day earlier.

The board said that should TA Associates make a firm offer at £24.50, it was "minded" to tell shareholders they should accept the deal.

That offer would value the business at about £550m.

The business was founded by the late Brian Conlon in 1996, with the name First Derivatives.

He grew it to be one of Ireland's most successful technology firms employing about 3,000 people across its global operations.

The Conlon family still own about 10% of the business.

Commissioner concerned over ex-officer abuse

by Owen May 17, 2025
written by Owen

A police commissioner has said he will ask his chief constable whether the force is "doing enough" following the sentencing of a former Essex officer.

Mark Ling, 39, was jailed for four years and six months after tricking girls into sending him explicit images by posing as a teenager on Snapchat and TikTok.

Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, Roger Hirst, said he would meet with Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington.

Mr Harrington has said Ling "does not represent" the thousands of hard-working officers in the county.

Ling, from Ipswich, admitted 13 sexual offences involving children and was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday.

The force said it was told of allegations about offences that happened between March 2021 and February 2023.

He was sacked from the force following an accelerated misconduct hearing in December 2024.

Roger Hirst said "we men" also have to stand up to eradicate the sort of behaviour displayed by Mark Ling

Mr Hirst said 143 people were rejected from roles at Essex Police last year following the vetting process.

In 2023, inspectors rated its vetting and counter-corruption measures as "good".

"It is good to know that bar is being kept high and it is something I review with the chief constable on a regular basis," he told BBC Essex.

"We are looking at what the history is here, but frankly one case is too many.

"This is something that is really disgusting behaviour. I will now be sitting with the chief constable again asking are we doing enough? What more can we do?"

Mr Hirst also revealed about 40% of the Essex force had been hired in the last five years.

Ling joined the force as a police constable in 2010 and later served in one of its operational support groups.

Mr Hirst continued: "Public trust and confidence in policing is undermined by every single case that we get like this and it is a huge frustration to the overwhelming majority of police officers we have who go out and do a job and protect the public and keep them safe.

"I'm very pleased that he is gone but the question is how can we be sure that it won't happen again?"

Mr Harrington has said tackling violence against women and girls is an "absolute priority" for the force.

"This is not something where women and girls are alone, we men have to stand up and make sure that this sort of behaviour is eradicated," added Mr Hirst.

Mr Harrington said: "[Ling] does not represent the thousands of hardworking, professional, and dedicated officers, staff, and volunteers who work tirelessly each day to keep you safe.

"I know they are as disgusted at Ling's actions as the public will be."

Fly-tipper who dumped bed by roadside fined £4,600

by Oliver May 17, 2025
written by Oliver

A man has been ordered to pay a total of £4,600 for dumping an old bed by the side of a road in north west London as part of a local council's crackdown on fly-tippers.

Naiffisa Abbas was photographed by a roadside camera leaving the bed, alongside other rubbish, at a known fly-tipping spot on Queensbury Park Road, Queensbury in March 2024.

Abbas, from Wembley, was found guilty at Willesden Magistrates' Court, where a judge added a further £2,000 to the initial fine because he failed to attend his hearing.

Brent Council says the fine sends a message that it "won't accept" fly-tipping.

The local authority says it has recently "ramped up" action on offenders by installing cameras at various hotspots and issuing 30% more fines.

More enforcement officers have been deployed and they have actively been touring the borough looking for evidence of offenders and fining them £1,000, the council says.

Last year, Brent Council declared a crackdown on what it called "selfish litter louts", after 35,000 cases of fly-tipping were recorded in the borough in 2022-2023.

The crime currently costs the local authority more than £1.5m each year, the Local Democracy Service reports.

Brent Council
As part of a crackdown on the crime, Brent Council has said its officers have been actively touring the borough looking for evidence to link to offenders

Cabinet member for the environment, Krupa Sheth, said: "We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping, which means you will see more enforcement officers on the streets catching people like we have done here.

"Well done to them and let this be a lesson to anyone considering fly-tipping our streets, we won't accept it."

Brent Council says its campaign is "beginning to yield results", with the number of fly-tipping incidents now decreasing.

As part of the government's Plan for Change, local authorities were given additional powers to clamp down on fly-tipping offenders.
